Stepping Stones Projects

Students are encouraged to share ideas, make suggestions and take an active responsibility in organising activities, housekeeping and making decisions.   Classes are small allowing support to be tailored to individual needs. Students take part in group activities as well as individual personal projects.  In addition to our structured activities we organise outings throughout the year and an annual holiday.

As well as a means of expression, art and craft is used as a framework for broader learning, as an opportunity to pursue individual projects and to work as part of a team with a common goal. In line with our aim of engaging with the public and meeting others, the last 2 years have seen students and staff creating craft items to sell, most recently on our first Christmas Craft stall held on Norwich market.  For some students, art is central to their sense of self-worth and how they relate to the world. The art and craft room supports the kitchen by creating packaging for homemade cakes and illustrations and painted paper graphics to illustrate recipes. Recent projects have included dry needle felt, hand made paper making, papier mache bowls and painted pebbles.

Our allotment plots are just part of how we grow and garden.  There we grow the fruit and vegetables that keep our kitchen well supplied with fresh produce, as well as the ornamental plants we sell on our plant stall through the spring and summer. Students are well respected as growers by other allotment tenants, who often visit for advice, to swap plants or have a cup of tea.  Students have also visited to work in some private gardens as well as developing a planting scheme on the forecourt of our building.  We take part in horticultural events around the city, such as Anglia in Bloom and the Norwich Seed and Plant Swap.  Our garden inspires plant based ideas for art projects such as flower designs for a needle felt wall hanging, anemone flower pop up cards and provides the raw materials such as dried grasses and petals used in paper making.

learning living

Our IT suite is a highly creative space, where much of our work comes together electronically and digitally.  Students are supported to express themselves and talk about their work using a variety of digital media.  It’s the base from which students are encouraged to speak up, ask questions, find information and talk about their experiences.  It’s where our newsletter is created, short films produced, photos collected and edited and our website is updated. Students are supported with reading and writing as well drawing to communicate ideas, record activities and teach others.  The art groups produce a range of striking and colourful graphic designs as part of their many projects, which the IT groups have turned in to a range of greeting cards for sale.

Our kitchen is at the centre of much of what we do every day.  Students cook lunches, bake and decorate delicious cakes and make a range of preserves, using our colourful allotment harvest.  We are adventurous cooks, sampling food from all around the globe and enjoy creating our own dishes too.  The kitchen reaches out to our local community, by inviting guest cooks to come and share favourite recipes and students cater for, and serve at the tea dance held at our local community centre.   Friends and supporters come and sample our creations at our annual buffet and the students organise coffee mornings as part of their own charity fundraising (currently Guide Dogs for the Blind UK).
